How to Make Summer Reading More Fun Plus Bookmarks for Boys and Girls

Summer is the perfect time for the kids to catch up on their reading. There's nothing like a summer afternoon and a good book.  When I was a kid I had health problems and I wasn't that active physically but what was active was my IMAGINATION!  I loved reading and I would let my imagination run wild in choosing what the characters in my books looked like and everything else in the book.  I would sit for literally hours reading my favorite books. It didn't matter if I was inside or outside. I also LOVED, LOVED, LOVED going to my public library. The children's section was in the basement and it was such a fabulous place.  To me the idea of the library letting me go in and come out with as many books as I wanted was so great!

When my children got old enough we would hang out at the library together and bring home armfuls of books. Now that my children have children of their own they are keeping up the tradition of visiting the library. The love of reading is such a great family tradition.

Now how do we make summer reading fun for the kids? How do we get them to read?

Take the kids to the library and help them to discover what type of books speak to them. It may be mysteries (which was what I loved) or  books about sports, dinosaurs, flowers, coding, flower arranging, jewelry making and other fun things.  Make the trip to the library a reward for completing their chores etc. There's a place in the library for everyone in your family, even you.

Ask the librarian what books are popular with the kids in their age group and what their peers are checking out. Librarians can be sooooo helpful and they are there to assist you in any way.

Select a wide variety of reading material every time you go to the library to expose them to more things. Even magazines and comic books. Books about building, art and crafts, astronomy or cooking would definitely be a great way to go. They may have a hidden talent that could be developed this summer.

Find fun places for the kids to read. A designated reading corner with a pillow and blanket would work nicely. Reading to your preschoolers is the perfect way to develop a love for reading and it's great quality time together.  Your kids will always have a great memory of reading with you.

Reading Teepees are cool too. It defines a special place for the kids to read, whether it is inside or outside the house. Great reading memories can be made inside a fun reading teepee.   CLICK HERE TO GET THE DETAILS on making this  No Sew Teepee

A Halloween Treat for the Kids-Bookmarks Make Reading Fun! Sugar-FREE Treat

Halloween bookmarks are the perfect "Sugar-free" treat for the kids.  Include as part of a party favor for your Halloween party or with the Halloween books you're planning on buying this year.  6 different bookmarks are included in this Instant Download. Print at home or take to your favorite printer.  You can print as many as you like for Personal Use.

PERFECT FOR:
Halloween Party Favors
Classroom Party Gift/Treat
Gift from School Librarians
School Carnivals
Church Halloween Parties
Trick or Treaters
Gift from Teachers

We added some eyelets to the corner of these three bookmarks. We used this Crop-a-Dile tool to punch a hole in the bookmark and set the eyelet. Super simple to use. It's from We R Memories. Cut a 5" length of ribbon and thread through the eyelet. Then pull the ends of the ribbon up through the loop and tighten the ribbon.  Trim the ribbon ends to the length you want and cut at an angle.

You can purchase this tool at most any craft store. It isn't something that you will use every day but it is quite versatile in what you can do with it and is a high quality craft tool.  When I purchased mine I was able to get it in this clear case and it included some eyelets.

These bookmarks have a eyelet set in and the ribbon threaded through the opening.

However, you don't have to put an eyelet on the bookmarks for them to be cute!!! You don't even have to add a ribbon to the bookmarks. But if you want to......Just punch a hole in the bookmark, cut a 5" length of ribbon and tie as shown in the photo above. We printed ours on white cardstock.

Your little READERS will love getting these bookmarks. You don't have to wait until Halloween to give them out. Let them enjoy and use them throughout October.

Our Halloween Bookmarks are AVAILABLE HERE

Ideas for Kids Play Room, Rain Gutter Book Shelves, and Library

We're sharing some great ideas today that you could use to create a space just for the kids....complete with their own library as well. All it takes is a little imagination to make a space like this fun for the kids.

Have you heard of rain gutter bookshelves? There easy to install and you can customize the size to fit any wall in your home.  Our wall quote "Imagination, because a good book has no ending" would be the perfect on the wall above the shelves. It's easy to do and it defines a space for a child's library. This darling playroom was decorated by my daughter and their kids love spending time in their own space-reading and creating.

This wall quote comes in two different colors but the quote comes in one piece......you won't have to put up "imagination" and then trying to match and center the sentence below. We make it easy for you. The paper banner is made up of colors that match the decor in the entire room so it is a great decor accessory,  easy to make and very colorful.

You can make these rain gutter bookshelves as long or as short as you like. How big is the blank wall you have? Customize it to fit any space in your home whether it's a large space or a small space.

There's a corner in this playroom that is very well organized with all the creative tools the kids need and use. There's a child-sized table next to it for coloring and creating, This system came from IKEA and is very affordable.

This reading corner is complete with a bean bag to sit on. Who knows, the kids may be so comfortable they may stay and while and read more in their own library.

The "LOVE" sign is so darling, and the distressed look is easy to do too. A piece of beadboard was used for the backing.

Material and a hoop is all you need for this darling wall decor.  Super Simple!

A place to hang up the dress-ups is easy with this shelf.

Here's a easy tutorial for putting up Rain Gutter Shelves in your home.....and don't forget the vinyl quote to go above them......it will just finish the look!  Click HERE for the Vinyl Quote
